Discover, learn, and expand your cooking repertoire with Julia Collin Davison, Bridget Lancaster, Dan Souza, Lisa McManus, and our fabulous team of test cooks!

Bring the Mediterranean--from Italy and Greece, to Morocco and Egypt, to Turkey and Lebanon--into your kitchen with more than 500 fresh, flavorful recipes. This comprehensive cookbook translates the famously healthy Mediterranean diet for home cooks with a wide range of creative recipes, many fast enough to be made on a weeknight, using ingredients available at your local supermarket.

The structure of the book follows the guidelines of the Mediterranean Diet Pyramid. You'll find large chapters devoted to Beans and to Vegetables, the Seafood Chapter is larger than Poultry and Meat, and the Fruits and Sweets chapter, while shorter, is packed with recipes you can truly feel good eating.

Recipes include Spiced Baked Rice with Potatoes and Fennel, Tagliatelle with Artichokes and Parmesan, Orzo with Shrimp, Feta, and Lemon, Za'atar-Rubbed Chicken, Greek-Style Braised Pork with Leeks, and Orange Polenta Cake.

Instant favorite! I have a few wonderful Mediterranean cookbooks, and it's my go to region for culinary experiments. As much as I love those books, I really wish I had saved my money and purchased this one first. The sheer mass of information in this book is astonishing. With recipes from all over the region, including North Africa, Greece, Spain and Italy, you will never get bored with it.The book is divided up into the usual sections like soups, poultry, salads, etc. but with some additions like rice and grains, breads, flatbreads, pizzas, etc. The table of contents in each section lists special indicators (little colored squares) after dishes which are either fast (45 minutes or less) or vegetarian. Within each section, the recipes are varied. Each recipe starts with an explanation of why the dish is made the way it is, such as why the potatoes are boiled instead of microwaved, why this dish is blended by hand instead of a food processor, etc. This will save you tons of time when you are thinking of taking a shortcut and find that it doesn't turn out right. Then the recipe shows photos of steps that might be unfamiliar. And then there are little "notes" inserted every few pages which go into a specific ingredient, what to look for, how it's used...things like sardines, pancetta, bay leaves...or else methods, like how to properly wash and dry a salad, or how to salt-soak beans. Many of the recipes also list further variations, such as pan roasted cauliflower...which then shows how to add capers and pine nuts, or spices and pistachios. My only minor complaint is that the nutritional info for each recipe is listed...but it's all listed in an index in the back of the book rather than with each recipe. But don't let that stop you...the fact that it's there at all is one up on most other cook books!Much more than a book of recipes Wow! I rarely buy cookbooks now because there is so much available on the internet, but this book is worth the purchase. I just received mine yesterday and stayed up late reading it. There are 2 things that make this book stand out. First, the America's Test Kitchen chefs do the best job of testing recipes, methods, ingredients, etc... so you know they'll be good. Second, this is much more than a book of recipes. There are useful tips, explanations for why they chose a certain item (e.g. dried beans vs canned, brand recommendations), and excellent charts that compare different types of legumes or fish or beans. I'm a graduate of the CIA and this book is certainly as good as our textbooks. I plan to look at more ATK books.Recipes with a wide variety of flavorful ingredients produce consistently delicious dishes! The Complete Mediterranean Cookbook: 500 Vibrant, Kitchen-Tested Recipes for Living and Eating Well Every Day I'm not one to be able to stick to a diet at all so I wasn't looking for a diet book. Rather, I had decided to hone my eating habits into a healthy lifestyle. After researching the top healthy diets and seeing that the Mediterranean Diet is consistently in the top two, I settled on this cookbook. By choosing one dinner a day and having left-overs for lunch after a breakfast smoothie I not only feel great but I have inadvertently and steadily begun to shed a little weight. As an added bonus, my cravings have turned from sugary snacks to leftovers of whatever I've whipped up in the kitchen. I can't wait for dinner the next day! The recipes are not complicated in my opinion, but a beginner cook may find some to be a little challenging. Give it a go, though, as the methods are explained well and the results are worth the effort. Each and every recipe I've tried has been truly delicious and packed full of flavor.

"A fine, sensitive novel written with grace in a way that conveys the Chinese American's cultural heritage".(Starred review) -- ALA Booklist"A Chinese immigrant and his son build a flying machine in an unusual historical novel, unique in its perspective of the Chinese in America and its portrayal of early 20th-century San Francisco, including the Earthquake, from an immigrant's viewpoint."--"School Library Journal""A fine, sensitive novel written with grace in a way that conveys the Chinese American's cultural heritage." --"Booklist""A triumph."--"The New York Times Moon shadow is eight years old when he sails from China to join his father, Windrider, in America. Windrider lives in San Francisco and makes his living doing laundry. Father and son have never met.But Moon Shadow grows to love and respect his father and to believe in his wonderful dream. And Windrider, with Moon Shadow's help is willing to endure the mockery of the other Chinese, the poverty, the separation from his wife and country'even the great earthquake'to make his dream come true.

Newbery Honor Book Dragonwings by Lawrence Yep takes readers on an adventure-filled journey across the world.

Inspired by the story of a Chinese immigrant who created a flying machine in 1909, Dragonwings touches on the struggles and dreams of Chinese immigrants navigating opportunity and prejudice in San Francisco.

Moon Shadow only knows two things about his father, Windrider: he lives in San Francisco and used to craft beautiful kites.

One day shortly after his eighth birthday, Cousin Hand Clap arrives with a letter from Windrider asking Moon Shadow to join him in San Francisco. When Moon Rider arrives in America he learns that his father makes a living doing laundry and dreams of building a flying machine just like the Wright Brothers. But making this fantastical dream a reality proves to be no easy task, as intolerance, poverty, and even an earthquake stand in their way.

This is a great book and a good window into another culture and ... This is a great book and a good window into another culture and another time in history. I was reading it to my 8 year old son. I stopped because i felt it was a little too old for him. There are references to prostitution - which I wasn't ready to explain - and a character with an opiate addiction is a major plot point. I would say more appropriate for middle school age readers and above.Great book My 11yr old son loved this book. It has been passed around a couple times already.Based on the true story of a Chinese man who built and flew a flying machine in 1909 with history of Chinese culture. Excellent This historical fiction is a heartwarming, entertaining, an informative story of a young boy who comes to America to live with the father he doesn't remember, during the early 1900's. The story gives a fascinating look at the Chinese culture both in the homeland of Middle China, and the culture of families, groups, gangs and religion in Chinatown. The setting begins in 1903 in China, and is told through the eyes of the eight year old Moon Shadow, as he relates scenes of his past and leads up to his arrival in San Francisco. He is taken into the brotherhood of his father in the laundry service. Moon Shadow is quickly exposed to the poverty and depravity of the shanty towns and the opium houses that affect his very brotherhood family. He learns the suspicion, ill-treatment, and injustice by other people due to an extreme prejudice against the Chinese peoples. As time progresses, Moon Shadow and his father, Windrider, move to a white neighborhood where they live in a barn of a white lady, who has boarders. They are soon befriended by the lady and her niece. Windrider is naturally talented with machines and mechanics, doing odd jobs for people in the community until the great earthquake and fire of 1906, when all survivors of the burned areas are moved to tent cities until the city can begin to rebuild. The Chinese are eventually separated from everyone and forced to move from camp to camp. Soon after Windrider and Moon Shadown start to help rebuild in Chinatown, they go off on their own to a windy hill in Oakland, where Moon Shadow helps his dad fulfill his dream of building and flying in a "flying machine." This book tells of an ongoing struggle with money, family, and nature, that is balanced with laughter, forgiveness, family and friends. This is a story you will long remember, with an honest look at the struggles of the Chinese integration into Western culture.

EXCEPTIONAL Normally I only leave stars but with this book I had to write... You are an excellent writer.. I won't give the story away but you touched my heart.. I suffered with Tasha bcuz it's real...😢😢😢😢😢Gracious God! I've never shed so many years while reading a book. This story takes you through so much emotions. This is my first read by S. Yvonne and I swear this is a five star banger. To all the Tasha's of the world be strong and hang in there. I never lived in the projects nor have I had to care for myself as a child, but I am friends with people who did. Life is good if you believe. Great job!Phenomenal Read This is my very first time reading a book by this author. This book really hit me. I’ve read ALOT of books, but this one right there was probably one of the realest books I’ve read in a very long time. The way Tru and Pepper stepped up..the fact that QUA still stuck by her side no matter what..Tasha trying to hold it all together while slowly breaking down..man I had chills the entire time I read this. This shit hit home. I know a few people who have been/going through these exact situations til this very day. Man I had to sit and pray after I finished this one. No lie. I can not wait to read more of her work.
